Looking for a unique way to decorate your walls? Why not try wall decals from your favorite photos? Wall decals are a great way to show off your personality and add some character to your home. Whether you're looking to make premium wall decals from your own crafts, or find someone else to print them, you've come to the right place. We'll offer some tips and tricks for this project and get you on your way!
Print your own wall decals if you have a good printer
If you love customizing your home décor, then you'll be happy to know that you can print your own wall decals. All you need is a good printer and some printable vinyl.
Have some extra paper for test prints, and you might need to adjust your printer output quality. When you're satisfied with a print, you can cut it and adhere it to your wall. More on that below.
Choosing the right adhesive paper for custom wall decals
I like printable vinyl from these sellers, but of course – you can use whatever suits you best!
Be sure that the paper that you buy to produce your own decal is compatible with your printer. For example, if you have an inkjet printer, you'll need to use inkjet compatible paper. You shouldn't need to buy “premium ink” to produce exceptional image quality, but brand name ink is better.
Choosing the right surface for a custom decal
Smooth surfaces work best for stickers. If you have a highly textured wall, or if your wall has cheap paint, there is a risk that removing your custom decal may damage the paint or drywall. If you need to remove it, you can try to use a hair dryer to warm the adhesive and minimize damage. The best way to prevent damage is to only apply wall decals on surfaces that you can repair.
Choosing a professional printer for custom vinyl wall murals
If you want high quality vinyl media decals, you may not be able to print them yourself. A professional wall decal is pretty affordable, especially if you're able to buy large quantities to make custom wall murals in your home. Here are some things to look for with a professional printer of wall decals:
Do they have a satisfaction guaranteed policy?
A satisfaction guaranteed policy means that they'll offer a free replacement if something goes wrong with image quality, picture scaling, or application. If you're worried about the quality of your decals, this policy can give you peace of mind.
Do they offer discounts for large orders?
If you're looking to make a large custom wall mural, it's worth asking for a discount. A reputable printer should be able to offer discounts if you order multiple decals at once.
Do they have a damaged print policy?
If shipping damages your family photo, the company should be willing to stand behind their final product. Unwrap whatever package you receive carefully, but ask for help if your wall decal comes damaged or poorly packaged.
Understand file quality and eliminate quality loss for your wall decal
Small images and vintage family portraits are sometimes hard to create large wall decals from. Request the native file you have, or if possible a high quality scan, to ensure that image quality isn't lost when enlarged. You can try using a tool like Photoshop to increase the photo size, or you can ask for help.
What file format do I need for a wall decal? DOC? PPT? ZIP? XLS? PNG? JPG?
Most printers prefer image files for photographic wall decals. That would be a PNG or JPG file. If you have it in a Word document, PowerPoint, or other file, they may be able to help you with a special process of file extraction. Just ask.
Do YOU make wall decals?
StickerCrypt will do custom wall decals, but we don't generally have a lot of wall decal business. Our printers will do a maximum of 13×19 inch prints, and we can custom cut on a standard 12×12 space.
